Every season marks the “busy” season in the food and drinks industry. Autumn and winter are all about those cosy dishes to warm the heart. Spring and summer welcome in the food festivals, allowing visitors to soak up the sun, and enjoy street food and craft beer.
This summer has been no different, with new product releases, movements towards sustainable eating, and more food festivals making their debut. The “V” Word
With sustainability an ever-present concern, food companies are constantly evolving to fit the needs of our growing ethical concerns. At the Leisure F&B Expo, we’re totally on board with these green initiatives, and our adjoining shows also encourage this ethos. Our Holiday Park and Resort Innovation show has even provided some insight into the meat-free movement.
That said, some companies don’t need that push, and are already exploring the avenues of meat-free living, or veganism, as I’m sure you know well. Evie-May Ellis, whose life goal has been to set up her own business, has finally done it. She’s put together her very own vegan catering business, Heart Street, with the aim of feeding home comforts, on-the-go.
The company is not only vegan, but plastic-free, and promotes the use of food waste as a compostable entity. Now that’s something we like to see.
Along the same lines, another fantastic start-up company has recognised the need for a vegan alternative to our favourite pub snack - pork scratchings. The company, aptly named The Vegan Pig, is currently fundraising for money to get their idea off the ground - definitely and up-and-coming business to look out for.
However, it’s not all good news for everyone. With the popularity of veganism emerging a few years ago, numerous food stops opened to capitalise on the trend. But, since then, many have had to close their doors due to a lack of interest, for example, Miami Burger in Reading. Due to their lack of appeal to the wider market, it seems that providing a few vegan options, instead of purely vegan recipes, is the solution.
The Derry Diet
After the success of hit comedy TV series, Derry Girls, Derry has now been put on the map as a place to visit. With this new exposure, the first street-food festival arrived on the shores of this Northern Ireland town, during mid-July. After a successful debut, we may be seeing this little gem popping up year on year.
Starbucks’ New Star
Finally, we’re moving onto a bigger name, Starbucks, who have recently partnered with Nestlé to launch their new product, the refrigerated creamer. Coming in three delicious flavours—Caramel, Cinnamon Dolce, and White Chocolate—these milky concoctions are simply poured into your favourite coffee blend, to add that extra sweetness. Set to hit grocery shelves very soon, will you spot them in your local supermarket?
