The Plastic Free Movement
An extremely cool product has been created by PriestmanGoode; a completely plastic-free flight tray, to help reduce plastic waste on flights. That’s not even the best part, though, as the tray is actually edible! Some of the ingredients they’ve used to form the tray include:
- Coffee granules
- Banana leaf
- Coconut wood
All of these products are completely biodegradable, so even if it's not eaten, it won’t remain in the environment for long.
What’s more, it’s not just big companies that are getting behind the movement, but celebrities too! In fact, Sarah Ferguson, the South African swimmer, swam for a plastic free ocean this month, to tackle the problem with force.
Food Sustainability Stories
In a different vein of sustainability, numerous companies are getting on board with changing food habits for environmental purposes. For example, a new restaurant in Cape Town, called ‘The Insect Experience’, has opened with an insect-only menu! With insects becoming one of the key ways to improve our environmental footprint, this is a great step in the right direction.
What’s more, the National Park has attempted to bust the myth that leaving food waste lying around is acceptable. They’ve made it clear that, although food waste decomposes, it changes the ecosystems and behaviour of animals, when they eat the wasted food.
For example, instead of hunting for food themselves, they may start relying on the leftovers, becoming incapable of searching themselves. Therefore, all rubbish, food or not, should be disposed of correctly at home.
Finally, numerous companies have also jumped aboard the meat-free movement to reduce their carbon footprint. With the recent airing of Jamie Oliver’s Meat-Free Meals, this comes at the perfect time, as exposure is being pushed by some of the biggest names in the industry.
In many cases, brand new meat-free companies are making their meat-free mark. Some examples of this include:
- The Tofoo Co., a company specialising in tofu products, have made a £4.8 million turnover in just their third year.
- Selfridges food hall, in London, have launched their ‘salmon’ sushi, which is a vegan alternative to sushi, supposedly tasting just like salmon.
- SeaWorld have recently launched their meat-free burger, named the Impossible™ Burger, throughout park menus.
- Lewis Hamilton has been a vegan since 2017, and has launched his very own meat-free burger chain called Neat Burger.
- A number of lab meat brands have joined together against American lobbyists, who are keen on removing the word “meat” from meat-free products.
- Cambridge University received criticism from farmers for cutting beef and lamb off of their menu, which will help to reduce their carbon emissions drastically.
- Disney, in the US, are adding a collection of vegan foods to their menu.
